The European Union has decided not to pursue a temporary ban on facial recognition tech and wants countries to develop their own regulations, according to The Financial Times.
Last month, the BBC reported that the E.U. was weighing a five-year moratorium on using facial recognition in public areas, which it said would provide more time to study the controversial technology.
The plan was outlined in a draft paper by the European Commission, which has since removed the recommendation, according to The Times. Instead, the commission is urging its member states to develop their own specific rules for rolling out facial recognition systems, which are already seeing bans and challenges in their use worldwide. A source told the Times that the previous draft was “very popular among civil rights campaigners” who are concerned about privacy and abuse, “But the security community is against the ban because they think it’s a good tool.” (Src: InsideAI)
