A new algorithm can predict fairly accurately how critics and audiences will react to movies using only plot summaries. Researchers gathered the plot summaries of 42,306 movies, many from Wikipedia, and used models to break up the summaries by sentence.
A system called sentiment analysis analyzed each sentence and rated them based on whether they were considered positive or negative. (Movies that perform well, such as 1951’s “Alice in Wonderland,” generally have more fluctuations in sentiment, reflecting their excitement or “volatility”). In tests, three methods could predict fairly accurately whether a film would be unpopular, while one method worked particularly well at predicting which comedies and thrillers would receive negative press from reviewers. – SCIENCE MAG
