Front page news of May 9, 2017 – Times of India said “Technology giants prepare for layoffs ,” a worrisome news to read right in the morning for most of the working people in technology domains and increasingly for future engineering graduates. News says, lay-offs are happening on a scale not seen since the 2008-10 downturn.
Those taking the hit first are mid and senior-level professionals — those with 10-20 years of experience. But the expectation is that lower level employees, too, will be hurt later in the year as growth in the $150-billion industry slows far more than anticipated and companies move towards hiring more in the US. Peter Bendor Samuel, CEO of IT consulting firm Everest Group also thinks that the most vulnerable employees are those with three-seven years of experience.
This problem has arisen because “Almost 70% of the software people in organisations cannot be upgraded to these newer skills. Out of the 100 resumes we get, only 3-4 would be qualified,” says an industry expert. The shortage is persuading companies to hire freshers with 40% of the actual required skill and then train them along with the job. Existing employees too are made to go through compulsory boot-camps and are expected to pass the courses. In many cases, engineers who undergo training are expected to get a project within six months. “If they don’t, it usually leads to termination of the job. Job positions for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning developers, data scientists, software architects, data engineers, UI (user interface), and UX (user experience) are the most difficult to fill for companies. The number of active candidates present for these roles is less than half the demand. These niche positions are popular across industries, but majority of the demand comes from the IT sector. On the other hand, supply exceeds demand for some of the older skills like Java & PHP developers, AutoCAD (a drawing software skill needed in the manufacturing industry), micro-controller programming (an electronics skill), and solutions architect (a consumer-facing skill).
Looking at all these issues, we have started a #Disrupt4.0 talk and training series on the emerging technologies bringing in the 4th. Industrial Revolution starting with Artificial Intelligence (AI). We are aspiring to train freshers and professionals in this hard to find skillset of data science, AI, ML etc. We have delivered talks across Bengaluru on topics like Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, Business of AI, Basics of Machine Learning etc. Pictures of previous events can be seen on below mentioned social channels:
